CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – A person was killed in a crash that shut down I-77 south for more than two hours Wednesday morning.© Provided by WBTV Charlotte Crews were called to a deadly crash Wednesday morning on I-77 South at I-85.
The accident happened right near I-85 before exit 13a.
Highway Patrol confirmed one person, identified as 35-year-old Tanish Ashley Key Berry, died. WBTVs Storm3 vehicle and crew were involved in a minor crash on I-77 south shortly before the fatal accident occurred.
State Troopers tell WBTV that Storm3 was involved in a crash against the left side jersey wall and became disabled just before 6 a.m. on I-77 south. Troopers say two other vehicles then stopped behind Storm3. When a black Nissan signaled to merge into traffic, it was “struck by a gray SUV sending it across 3 lanes and into a metal bridge rail.”
WBTV can confirm that our Storm3 driver was not injured but we do not know at this time what led to that initial crash or the name of the driver who died at the scene.
At this point, the highway is back open and has been since about 10 a.m. Meanwhile, state troopers are continuing their investigation and we will update everyone once we learn more.
